Tenerife Roads Closed Due to Storm Damage Following Cyclone Xynthia

The Cabildo de Tenerife (Island Government) is currently working hard to clear the Teide Access road from La Orotava (from kilometre 19 to 22) to remove branches and fallen trees which were blown down by the gale force winds which hit the island over the weekend and mainly affected the higher ground. Hundreds of pine trees were uprooted by the wind and fell onto the road which means that the road will be closed to traffic from 08.00 to 15.00 hours from tomorrow [Tuesday 2nd March] and until the following Monday [8th March].

The TF-24 road which runs from La Laguna to El Portillo was reopened to traffic yesterday [Sunday 28th February] although the Cabildo is urging the general public to step up safety precautions when driving on this road.

The Cabildo hopes to be able to reopen the access road to Teide through Vilaflor (TF-21) in the next few days once the cleaning and restoration work to the unstable borders affected by the February storms has been completed.

And More Good News – The Number of Tourists Visiting Tenerife Increased in January

Is it symbolic that as the storm clouds disappear over the horizon, the tourism figures show that the number of visitors to Tenerife in January 2010 rose compared with the same period in 2009.

Overall there was an increase of 2.36% with British, German and Scandinavian visitors all on the up.

The south of Tenerife showed a 2.72% increase, whilst the north enjoyed 3.25% more visitors than in January 2009.

Lets hope the trend continues.

Roads to Teide Re-open After the Storms and Snow

It’s good news bad news time. The Tenerife Government have just announced that all roads to Mount Teide are open, that’s the good news.

There is one road still closed and that’s the TF21 between Boca Tauce and El Portillo.

Unless I’m missing something, that’s the whole of the main road through the crater and past the cable car station.

That, you could say, is the bad news.

Tenerife Trams – Line Two is open for Business

From midday today, travelling across the metropolitan area of Santa Cruz just got easier. Tranvia’s second line line runs between La Cuesta, Taco and Tíncer and if you want see for yourself how smooth a ride it is, all journeys are free during today and tomorrow (Sunday 31st May).

Flights from Tenerife – Miami Bound

From 20th June Air Europa will be operating a service from Tenerife Norte to Miami. That’s the good news. The bad news is that when I checked the price of a one-way ticket it was almost two and a half grand.

They clearly definitely want you to come back to Tenerife as the return ticket was a not-quite-so-bank-busting €620.

The Most Famous Man in the World to Visit Tenerife

If any proof was needed that 'Tenerife Matters', how about this?

It's just been anounced by Ricardo Melchior, President of the Tenerife Cabildo, that the new President of the United States, Barack Obama will visit Tenerife.

But here's the rub, it might not be in 3 months, 6 months, or even a year, but we're definitely in his travel plans...presumably Barack's got a few things to sort out before he can jet off for some R&R in the Tenerife sunshine under the guise of an official visit.
